An acre and a square foot both measure area, but they are normally used at very different scales. Acres are common for residential lots, farmland, ranches, commercial sites, parks and development land. Square feet are more familiar for buildings, floor plans, smaller lots, landscaping zones and construction estimates. Converting acres to square feet puts a large land measurement into a unit that is often easier to compare with plans, footprints and project dimensions.
The conversion factor is exact: 1 acre = 43,560 square feet. To convert any acre value, multiply it by 43,560. That rule works for whole acres, decimal acres and fractional acre values after the fraction is expressed as a decimal. For example, 2.5 acres contains 108,900 ft², while 0.25 acre contains 10,890 ft².
Example: 2.5 acres × 43,560 = 108,900 square feet.
Example: 87,120 ft² ÷ 43,560 = 2 acres.
If you need the neighboring land-unit relationship, the Acres to Square Yards converter uses 4,840 square yards per acre, and the Square Feet to Acres calculator performs the reverse calculation directly.
Because 1 square yard equals 9 square feet, the acre relationship can also be checked through square yards: 4,840 yd² × 9 = 43,560 ft². In metric units, one acre is approximately 4,046.8564224 square meters or 0.40468564224 hectares. For background on the modern SI system used for metric area, see the BIPM SI Brochure.
This acres to square feet chart gives fast reference values for small residential lots, fractional acreage and larger parcels. On mobile devices, the table is intentionally placed inside a horizontal table wrapper so every column remains readable without breaking the page layout.

Decimal acreage uses exactly the same method. A 0.37-acre parcel is 0.37 × 43,560 = 16,117.2 square feet. A 1.85-acre parcel is 80,586 square feet. Keeping several decimal places until the final step is useful when the original survey or property record reports acreage precisely.
Fractional-acre lot sizes appear frequently in residential real estate. A quarter acre means 0.25 acre, a half acre means 0.5 acre and three-quarters of an acre means 0.75 acre. Because the acre-to-square-foot factor is exact, common fractions produce simple results that are worth remembering.

An acre is an area unit, not a fixed rectangle. The acre developed historically as a land measure and today is defined by area rather than by one mandatory set of side lengths. That is why a one-acre parcel can be square, rectangular, long and narrow, triangular, curved or irregular while still containing exactly the same total area.
A helpful traditional relationship is 1 acre = 4,840 square yards. Since each square yard contains 9 square feet, multiplying 4,840 by 9 gives 43,560 square feet. The result is exact. The number 43,560 therefore represents total area, not a required property shape or perimeter.
An acre can have many shapes. This illustration uses a 220-foot by 198-foot rectangle because 220 × 198 = 43,560 ft².
An acres to square feet conversion is useful whenever a property or land listing gives acreage but another part of a project uses square feet. Real-estate listings may advertise a 0.6-acre lot, while a site plan gives a house footprint, driveway, patio and lawn zones in square feet. Converting the full parcel to square feet gives all of those measurements a common unit.
Contractors and property owners may also use the conversion for fencing plans, landscape layouts, grading, drainage, hardscape estimates, solar layouts and preliminary development studies. The square-foot result should be treated as an area total. It does not automatically represent usable, buildable or developable land because setbacks, easements, slopes, wetlands, access requirements and local rules may reduce the portion available for a specific purpose.
Acres are convenient for larger land areas. They keep property figures compact, so a parcel can be described as 0.8 acre, 2 acres or 40 acres instead of using much larger square-foot numbers.
Square feet are a smaller area unit and are easier to compare with structures, rooms, paving, landscaping and many construction quantities.
Decimal acres are converted exactly the same way as whole acres. Multiply the decimal number by 43,560. For example, 0.62 acre equals 27,007.2 square feet. A parcel listed as 1.27 acres equals 55,321.2 square feet. A 3.4-acre tract equals 148,104 square feet.
When the starting acreage was rounded in the source listing, the converted square-foot result should not be treated as more precise than the original figure. For example, if a listing says “about 1.2 acres,” the mathematical result of 52,272 ft² is exact for 1.2 acres, but the actual parcel may differ if the 1.2-acre figure was only an approximation.
For the reverse conversion, divide the square-foot measurement by 43,560. A 10,890 ft² lot is 0.25 acre. A 21,780 ft² lot is 0.5 acre. A 65,340 ft² parcel is 1.5 acres. The reverse calculator above performs this step automatically and also shows square yards and metric equivalents.
Example: 30,000 ft² ÷ 43,560 ≈ 0.688705 acres.
For a dedicated reverse page, use the Square Feet to Acres converter. If you are moving between smaller customary units, the Square Feet to Square Yards converter may also be useful.
Lot-size questions are one of the most common reasons to convert acres into square feet. A quarter-acre lot contains 10,890 ft², a half-acre lot contains 21,780 ft² and a one-acre lot contains 43,560 ft². These figures represent the entire parcel area before considering structures, rights-of-way, easements or zoning constraints.
Suppose a home sits on 0.4 acre. The parcel contains 17,424 ft². If the house footprint is 2,200 ft², you should not simply assume the remaining 15,224 ft² is open usable yard. Garages, driveways, decks, setbacks and site restrictions may occupy or constrain additional land. The conversion helps establish the total area, while planning documents determine how that area can be used.
Construction and landscaping estimates often use square feet because materials are quoted per square foot or because drawings show length and width in feet. If a large project starts with acreage, converting to square feet can simplify early calculations. For example, 1.75 acres equals 76,230 ft². If only 60% of that parcel is expected to receive a particular treatment, an early planning quantity would be 45,738 ft² before waste, exclusions or detailed takeoff adjustments.
For concrete work, pavement, turf, mulch fabric, coatings or roofing-style surface estimates, always distinguish between total land area and the actual project surface. Acreage conversion provides a common area unit; it does not replace a measured takeoff. If your project later needs metric dimensions, use the Acres to Square Meters converter or Square Meters to Square Feet converter.
These are common benchmark conversions: 1 acre equals 43,560 ft²; 2 acres equal 87,120 ft²; 5 acres equal 217,800 ft²; and 10 acres equal 435,600 ft². For larger properties, the numbers increase quickly because every additional acre contributes another 43,560 square feet.
At 20 acres, the total is 871,200 ft². At 50 acres, it is 2,178,000 ft². At 100 acres, it is 4,356,000 ft². Although square feet are mathematically valid for parcels this large, acres or square miles may be easier to read and communicate. The multi-unit calculator above lets you compare those representations without repeating the arithmetic.
Area conversions are easiest to manage when you convert through one known base relationship. For customary units, 1 acre equals 43,560 ft² and 4,840 yd². For metric comparisons, 1 acre is approximately 4,046.8564224 m² and 0.40468564224 hectares. A hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters under the SI system.
If you are comparing international property data, it can be helpful to keep both acres and hectares. For example, 5 acres is approximately 2.023428 hectares. You can continue with the Acres to Hectares converter or use the Hectares to Acres calculator for the reverse direction.
One acre has 43,560 square feet. Missing a zero makes the answer ten times too small.
An acre measures area, so the output must be square feet (ft²), not linear feet.
43,560 ft² is fixed, but the length and width can vary greatly.
Keep the original acreage precision until the final display step.
Conversion does not account for setbacks, easements, structures or site constraints.
The primary conversion uses the exact factor of 43,560 square feet per acre. Calculator accuracy is therefore limited mainly by the precision of the number you enter and by display rounding. If the source acreage is exact to four decimal places, entering all four decimals preserves that information through the calculation. If the source says only “approximately 2 acres,” a highly detailed square-foot output should still be understood as an estimate of the parcel's true measured area.
For legal boundaries, taxes, deeds, surveys and construction layout, use the measurements in the applicable survey or official records rather than relying on a general online conversion alone. This page is designed for fast unit conversion and planning comparisons.
