Concrete Annulus Calculator: Enter the outside diameter, inside diameter and concrete thickness for a ring-shaped slab or pad. The calculator subtracts the inner circle from the outer circle, multiplies that annulus area by thickness and converts the result to cubic feet and cubic yards. Separate panels handle ring walls, multiple annuli and bag/weight/cost planning.

How to Use the Concrete Annulus Calculator

The Concrete Annulus Calculator is built for ring-shaped concrete. A true annulus is the area between two concentric circles. Measure the finished outer diameter and the diameter of the circular opening, then enter concrete thickness. The calculator converts both diameters to radii, subtracts the inner circle area from the outer circle area and multiplies by thickness.

Use the Ring Wall panel when the annulus continues vertically as a hollow cylinder. Use Multiple Annuli when a project contains several separate rings. The Bags, Weight & Cost panel is useful after the concrete volume is already known.

                          Concrete Annulus Area Formula

An annulus is created by subtracting a smaller circle from a larger circle with the same center. If you know diameters, divide each by two to obtain radius.

                          Annulus Area A = π(R² − r²)

R is the outside radius and r is the inside radius.

                          Concrete Annulus Volume Formula

Once ring area is known, multiply by concrete thickness or height to calculate volume. If the annulus is a flat slab, thickness is typically entered in inches and converted to feet before multiplication.

Annular Concrete Volume Volume = π(R² − r²) × Thickness

For cubic yards, divide cubic feet by 27.

                          Concrete Annulus Calculation Example

Suppose a circular ring slab has a 10-foot outside diameter, a 6-foot inside diameter and is 6 inches thick. The outer radius is 5 feet and the inner radius is 3 feet.

                          Example: π × (5² − 3²) = π × 16 ≈ 50.27 ft² of ring area. At 0.5 ft thickness, volume ≈ 25.13 ft³, or about 0.93 yd³.

With a 10% planning allowance, the estimated order becomes approximately 1.02 cubic yards before supplier rounding.

Annulus Diameter, Radius and Ring Width

Outer and inner diameters define the overall concrete ring. The radial ring width is the difference between the outer radius and inner radius. This is not the same as subtracting the diameters without dividing by two.

Ring Width Radial Ring Width = Outer Radius − Inner Radius = (Outer Diameter − Inner Diameter) ÷ 2

A 10 ft OD and 6 ft ID produces a 2 ft radial ring width.

                          Concrete Ring Wall Calculator

A circular ring wall is mathematically a hollow cylinder. Instead of a thin slab thickness, use the full vertical wall height. The cross-sectional plan area is still the annulus area between outside and inside radii.

Ring Wall Volume Volume = π(R² − r²) × Wall Height

Multiply by quantity if the project contains more than one identical ring wall.

This geometry can be useful for circular tank bases, planter walls, pits, monument rings and similar concrete elements. It does not determine wall reinforcement, minimum thickness, lateral resistance or structural adequacy.

Annulus vs Concrete Ring vs Concrete Cylinder

                          Annulus / Ring

                          • Has an outer circular boundary
                          • Has an inner circular opening
                          • Concrete occupies the area between circles

                          • Volume = πr²h
                          • Typical for round columns or piers

For solid round elements, use the Concrete Column Calculator or Concrete Pier Calculator.

                          Multiple Concrete Annuli

Projects sometimes include several rings of different sizes—for example multiple planter bases, equipment pads or monument rings. Calculate each annulus independently, then add the exact volumes before applying the project-wide planning allowance.

The Multiple Annuli panel accepts three rings. If you have more, group identical rings or run the calculator in several passes and add the results.

                          Concrete Bags for an Annulus

For small concrete rings, bagged concrete may be practical. Once planned cubic feet are known, divide by the selected bag yield and round up.

                          Concrete Annulus Weight Calculator

Concrete weight is useful for material handling, demolition estimates, lifting and dead-load planning. The calculator multiplies concrete volume by the selected density.

Concrete Weight Weight = Concrete Volume × Concrete Density

For additional conversions, use Concrete Volume to Weight.

                          Concrete Annulus Cost Calculator

The cost panel multiplies cubic yards by a local concrete price. This represents basic concrete material only and does not include delivery, short-load fees, pump service, reinforcement, formwork, labor or finishing.

Material Cost Concrete Cost = Cubic Yards × Price per Cubic Yard

For truck and delivery planning, use the Concrete Delivery Calculator.

                          Annulus Formwork and Reinforcement

Ring-shaped concrete requires both outside and inside form control. Even small dimensional errors can materially change concrete volume because both circular areas are squared in the formula. Measure finished inside and outside diameters at multiple locations if the forms are not perfectly rigid.

Reinforcement may follow circular, radial or project-specific detailing. Material quantity does not establish bar size or spacing. Use the Concrete Rebar Weight Calculator after reinforcement is specified.

                          Common Concrete Annulus Estimating Mistakes

                          • Using diameter as radius: this greatly overstates circle area and volume.
                          • Subtracting diameters instead of circle areas: annulus area requires π(R² − r²).
                          • Forgetting thickness conversion: inches must be converted to feet before cubic-foot calculation.
                          • Entering an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter: the geometry is impossible.
                          • Ignoring multiple rings: multiply or add every annulus in the project.
                          • Using excavation size: calculate finished concrete geometry, not working-room dimensions.
                          • Ignoring planning allowance: curved forms and field variation can change volume.
                          • Using quantity math as structural design: reinforcement and wall thickness require separate design input.

                          Concrete Annulus Calculator FAQs

Answers about concrete ring area, annular volume, ring walls, bags, weight and cost.

A concrete annulus is a ring-shaped concrete area formed between an outer circle and an inner circular opening. It can be used for circular pads, tank rings, planters, pits, columns, monuments and other ring-shaped pours.
Annulus area equals π times the outer radius squared minus π times the inner radius squared: A = π(R² − r²).
Multiply the annulus area by concrete thickness or height. Use consistent units, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27.
Yes. The main calculator uses outer and inner diameters and converts each diameter to radius automatically.
That geometry is invalid. The inner diameter or radius must always be smaller than the outer diameter or radius.
Yes. The Ring Wall panel uses outer radius, inner radius and wall height to calculate the volume of a hollow cylindrical ring.
Yes. The Multiple Annuli panel lets you calculate up to three different ring-shaped sections and add their volumes.
The calculator includes selectable planning allowances. The correct allowance depends on form accuracy, subgrade, placement losses, geometry and supplier ordering increments.
Yes. The Bags, Weight & Cost panel can convert annulus concrete volume into approximate 40 lb, 60 lb or 80 lb bag quantities.
Yes. It multiplies cubic feet by a selected concrete density and converts the result to pounds, kilograms and short tons.
Yes. Enter a local price per cubic yard to estimate basic concrete material cost.
Yes, if the shape is a true annulus with concentric outer and inner circles and uniform thickness.
Not directly. If the inner opening is not centered or the thickness varies, divide the project into measurable sections or use project-specific geometry.
No. It estimates material quantity only. Reinforcement, wall thickness, footing size, concrete strength and structural adequacy must be determined separately.
